In recent years I have given a lot of thought to people identifying themselves through their job titles. You ask a person what they do for a living, and more often than not they answer I AM a hairdresser/chef/lawyer/writer/florist/teacher/fireman/musician/plumber/accountant/blogger/waitress/photographer/shopkeeper etc. Yet, these words describe a vocation rather than identity. I have fallen into this trap myself in the past, living up to the stereotype projected to my role at work. Until one day I woke up and realised that no, I AM NOT a bookseller, but human first and foremost, a female human being to be more precise. So today, I am me. And you be you. The path to (bigger) life changes is rarely linear. There'll be curves and bends and the occasional U-turn. You'll face crossroads without having a clue which direction to take. Some days everything seems to be accelerating, taking a leap out of your control, and other days things slow down, come to a complete stop even. And that's okay. The best part is, you can choose. While you may not necessarily know today where this road of change leads to, deciding which actions to take to get there is entirely up to you. 🎢 I've had a confusing week, hence the Instagram feed purge. Let's talk about tea. Japanese tea to be more precise. Tea was brought to Japan from China on the 9th century by Buddhist monks. Those first seeds of the humble camellia sinensis plant were believed to put in the ground in Uji, a region that's to this day famous for its premium quality teas. However, the traditional practises of tea growing are fading and in danger of being lost with the aging population. Hills and valleys once inhabited by thousands of family run tea farms are becoming abandoned as the youth, dazzled by bright lights, is moving to the city because agriculture is so uncool - I couldn't disagree more! But then, out of the blue, @dmatcha_kyoto is founded by an entrepreneurial couple eager to preserve the area's unique tea growing culture. And boy do they know what they're doing! I can say with sincerity that no sencha nor matcha I'd ever tasted previously comes anywhere near to the single origin umami rich kinds produced by these knowledgeable innovators. Their passion and high standards are evident in every single product available in their beautiful little café and shop. One of the most curious finds for me on Japan's teascape was hōjicha - green tea roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal. This small town pictured above is where my meditation practice takes me recently. I guess you could call it a happy place. Among tea fields and winding mountain roads with few but friendly people on the streets who greet every passerby with a kind smile and curious gaze. It's cloudy with a hint of sun and the subtle spring breeze still carries the memory of a not so distant winter. The birds are reaching high notes rehearsing their sophisticated symphonies. It's been almost two months now since I left my job. It was the best decision I ever made. The two months off have taken me to places near and far, taught me numerous lessons, helped with letting go of old pain, provided moments of pure joy, opened up new opportunities, introduced me to some incredibly talented people and most importantly, seen me take the path of growing into the person I want to be today and become tomorrow.
